"Extra Innings" Looks More Like Little League as Season 18's Airing Schedule is Revealed

 When the Season 18 press release dropped, the logline was packed full of fluff, raving about this year's "expanded season" of ten episodes, hyping us up for an extra two (2) weeks of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. By those lines, we thought it was safe to assume that Season 18 would run for nine (9) weeks, with another double episode premiere, thus moving us up from the seven (7) weeks of new episodes we've experienced the last two seasons. However, by the looks of the upcoming airing schedule (which was just made public today), it seems like this is not the case at all. In fact, Season 18 seems to be giving us two fewer weeks of episodes by pushing double airings the entire run:

This isn't a first for Sunny, we had double features every week back when Season 15 was airing, but it is surprising to see for Season 18. Season 15's airing schedule received a lot of push back from fans, unhappy about their new season being condensed down to one month. With Season 16 reverting to a normal schedule (barring the double premiere), that seemed to be an acknowledgement that the double-features were a mistake. (However, this Season is also switching days of the week and shifting to simultaneous Hulu drops, so it doesn't seem like the Network is all too concerned with what fans are used to or prefer about Sunny's airing schedule.)

Of course, this is subject to change. Season 13's Charlie's Home Alone and The Gang Wins the Big Game were originally slated to air together, but were then split to two different weeks, so nothing is necessarily set in stone here, however it does look like that, for now, the plan is double features for Season 18's entire run. I wouldn't be holding my breath for a change (especially given this wasn't announced and there's no fan backlash to face until the episodes are already airing).

Now, you may notice that in the screenshot containing the airing listings, there are now two hyperlinked episode titles... which means we've got episode descriptions!

As predicted, Season 18 will premiere with "Frank Marries a Corpse" followed by "Dennis and Dee Don't Get Rich". The initial episode descriptions read, respectively, as follows:

"The guys help Frank with his cold feet ahead of his wedding to Sam. Dee tries to scare Sam off the nuptials with testimonies from The Waitress, Artemis, and Snail."

"The Reynolds twins push themselves to the limit to secure Sam's transfer of wealth. Charlie and Frank plan a proper memorial for Bonnie during the annual Mummers Parade."

If you're thinking these are quite minimalist descriptions, you wouldn't be incorrect—they don't even include the standard "written by" and "directed by" credits! Thankfully, that information (as well as more of the plot) is able to be filled in by us, having collected a lot over the course of Production.
