Season 18 “Shuts the Door” on the Bathroom Situation

 If you’ve been following this blog for awhile, you may remember a post back in July of 2024 entitled “Let's Talk about the Bathroom Situation…” And while that post did recount a years-long fandom debate (with both sides holding compelling arguments) regarding how many bathrooms Mac and Dennis have in their apartment (and where they might be located) for the sake of discussion and legacy, it was really made due to me asking Glenn Howerton that very question a few days prior.

Glenn’s answer? “We only established one… so I think it’s just my bedroom.”

Now of course when I asked this question and made that post, we couldn’t necessarily claim Glenn was cementing canon with his answer, he is, after all, just one creator/writer out of the group, and while I eventually planned to ask Rob this very question (to see if there was a general consensus, or if this was a debate amongst RCG as much as it was amongst fans), Season 18’s latest episode, Mac and Dennis Tear Their ACLs, ended the debate once and for all, solidifying Glenn’s answer to me as canon: Mac and Dennis have only one bathroom.

(And Dennis seems to be able to shut the door on Mac any time he feels like it. Pretty fucking great.)

While I felt pretty vindicated by my original headcanon (one bathroom, via Dennis’ room) being shared by Glenn, this episode canonizing that fact has made that feeling absolute, but the fact that this episode addressing Mac and Dennis’ bathroom situation was likely prompted by the question I asked Glenn that night is really what's sending me over the moon. 

And I am making this post in part because this should be the first post about Season 18's canon to this blog (though I’m loving this season so far, and will have a ton of back-dated thoughts to break down once everything’s aired), in part to boast, but mostly to express how awesome it is to see the Sunny crew continue to be inspired and motivated by fans engaging with this show earnestly. The fact that they acknowledge and delve into what we want to see, the characters lives and dynamics being expanded upon by what they’ve created and what they’ve still left open after all these years, is truly what makes this show so special.
